Iodine is Essential
- Getting the proper amount of iodine is not easy to obtain.
- Iodine is needed for the production of thyroid hormones for normal thyroid function.
- Iodine is needed for cells to change food into energy.
How to obtain iodine
- Iodine is commonly found in seafood, highest in seaweed, kelp.
- Seaweed, Nori, Wakame, Kombu Kelp, Organic Sea Kelp.
- Dried Prunes. Five dried prunes provide 13 mcg of iodine, or about 9% of the daily recommended value. Also high in many vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin K, vitamin A, potassium and iron.
- Lima Beans (The difference of iodine in the soil, fertilizers, and irrigation water determine the amount of iodine in fruits and vegetables. Lima Beans are a good source of fiber, magnesium, folate, and iodine.
- Iodized salt (approximately 71mcg of iodine in 1/4 teaspoon, 47% of daily recommended intake).
- Shrimp (good source of iodine, Selenium, phosphorus and vitamin B12, protein rich).
- Tuna (good source of iodine, iron, potassium, B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids).
- Cod (3 oz contains about 63-99 mcg, or 42-66% of the daily recommended amount. This depends on wild-caught or farm-raised).
Symptoms of iodine deficiency
Symptoms of iodine deficiency and related thyroid disorders can include:
- Swelling of thyroid glands in the neck
- A visible lump (goiter) on your neck
- Weight gain, fatigue and weakness
- Thinning hair
- Dry skin
- Feeling colder than usual
- Slowed heart rate
- Learning and memory difficulties
- Heavy or irregular periods
Iodine Deficiency Symptoms in Infants
- Frequent choking
- Enlarged tongue
- Puffy face
- Constipation
- Poor muscle tone
- Sleeping more often
Hypothyroidism Symptoms in Youth
Similar to those of adults, but may also include:
- Delayed development of permanent teeth
- Delayed puberty
- Slowed mental development
- Shorter than average height or limbs
Excessive amount of iodine can be harmful
- You can experience the same type of problems as iodine deficiency if you have to much iodine in your system, for example using supplements.

- Speak to your doctor or an accredited practicing dietitian before starting any supplements.
